Abstract

Dyeings or prints on textile fibres of cellulose acetate (including the triacetate) or polyethylene terephthalate with dyes not normally resistant to gas-fading are given a good resistance to gas-fading by forming within the fibres a water-insoluble basic zinc compound in amount equivalent to 0.5 to 2.5 per cent of zinc oxide, based on the weight of the fibres, the fibres being treated before, during or after the dyeing or printing operation, with an aqueous solution of a zinc salt of an acid, the solution being one that swells the fibres, followed by treatment with an aqueous alkaline liquid. Specified zinc salts are the acetate, formate, chloride and sulphate, the solution containing as a swelling agent acetic acid, formic acid, ethyl alcohol, normal or isopropyl alcohol, acetone, ethyl-methyl-ketone, diacetone alcohol, the mono-methyl- or mono-ethyl-ether of ethylene glycol or ethyl lactate. The alkaline treatment may be effected with sodium, potassium or ammonium carbonate, caustic alkalis, trisodium or tripotassium phosphate or ammonia. The Provisional Specification refers also to the treatment of films as well as fibres of cellulose esters and ethers in general.
