Abstract

Titanium dioxide used for delustring regenerated cellulose goods is improved by treatment with a compound of tungsten, molybdenum or uranium, either before use or whilst on the fibre; "treatment" includes mere mixing. The preferred compound is sodium tungstate. The titanium dioxide so treated may be incorporated in the spinning solution. Products delustred according to the invention have less tendency to fade when dyed with direct dyes. In examples: (1) artificial silk delustred with titanium dioxide is treated for \ba1/2\be hour at 85 DEG C. with 1000 parts water containing 3 parts sodium tungstate and 1 formic acid. Alternatively, the titanium dioxide may be so treated before use; (2) as above, but using sodium molybdate in place of sodium tungstate; (3) as above, using uranium nitrate; (4) 99 parts titanium dioxide is mixed with 1 part of sodium tungstate or molybdate and the whole employed as a delustrant. Specifications 430,993 and 448,262 are referred to.ALSO:Titanium dioxide for use in delustring regenerated cellulose artificial silk is improved by treatment with a compound of tungsten, molybdenum or uranium, either before use or whilst on the fibre; 'treatment' includes mere mixing. In examples: (1) Titanium dioxide is treated for \ba1/2\be hr. at 85 DEG C., with 1000 parts of water containing 3 parts sodium tungstate and 1 of formic acid, then washed, filtered and dried; (2) as above, but using sodium molybdate instead of tungstate; (3) titanium dioxide is treated for \ba1/2\be hr. at 85 DEG C., with 1000 parts of water containing 5 parts of uranium nitrate, washed and dried. Specifications 430,993 and 448,262, [both in Group IV], are referred to.
