Abstract

Substantive dyes, dyeing with; regenerated celluloses, dyeing.-Cellulosic or mixed cellulosic and albuminous textile fibres are dyed with substantive dyes in a boiling dye-bath which contains urea or a water-soluble derivative thereof or a salt of any of these compounds, or a compound, such as ammonium cyanate or cyanamide, which under the conditions of dyeing yields any of the above compounds. Water-soluble ammonium salts, e.g. ammonium chloride, sulphate, phosphate, bichromate, acetate, and formate may also be present during the dyeing. In examples: (1) a fabric of wool and spun rayon is dyed with 3-amino-6-hydroxybenzoic acid --> a -naphthylamine --> g -acid in a gently boiling bath containing urea and sodium sulphate; (2), (3) and (4) dimethylolurea, ammonium cyanate and urea hydrochloride respectively replace the urea of (1); (5) a similar fabric is dyed with Benzo light red 8BL in the presence of urea and ammonium acetate or sulphate; (6) the dyeing assistants of (5) are replaced by cyanamide and acetic acid; (7) and (8) similar material on cross-wound bobbins is dyed with Benzo light bordeaux 6BL with addition of N-methylurea and urea nitrate respectively. Mono-methylolurea is also specified as a suitable urea derivative.
