Abstract

Coloured discharge effects on cellulose ester or ether textile materials dyed in a dischargeable ground shade are obtained by applying thereto a printing paste comprising zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, a sulphuric acid ester of a leuco vat dye and sodium or other inorganic nitrite or another oxidizing agent which is effective only under acid conditions, ageing and developing in an acid bath. The printing paste may also contain a gum thickener, various solvents, softeners or penetrating agents, e.g. ethyl, isopropyl and butyl alcohols and the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, swelling agents, e.g. alkali metal salts of thiocyanic acid and assistants, e.g. urea. The acid bath is preferably a solution of sulphuric acid which may contain sodium dichromate. In examples, a printing paste containing zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, (1) Indigosol Scarlet 1B or (2) Indigosol Violet AZB, sodium nitrite, gum tragacanth thickener, ethyl alcohol, monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, sodium thiocyanate, urea and water is printed on cellulose acetate fabric dyed blue with 6-chloro-2 : 4-dinitro-2-acetylamino - 41 - (di - hydroxyethylamino) - 61 - methoxy-azobenzene, aged and developed in aqueous sulphuric acid containing sodium dichromate.
