Abstract
Cellulose acetate is dyed with vat or sulphur dyestuffs in an aqueous dyebath containing caustic alkali and a reducing agent, the process being carried out at 80-100 DEG C. Saponification is minimised by restricting the dyeing time, preferably by using the molten metal technique of Specifications 620,584, 655,415, 661,086, 665,454 and 681,983. The bath may contain dyeing auxiliaries and swelling agents, e.g., oils, glycol ethers, ethanol, urea or potassium thiocyanate, alone or in combination. The cellulose acetate may be in the form of fabric, yarn, felt, fibre or film and may be blended with other fibres (e.g. viscose). Examples are given of the process, the duration of the dyeing being six seconds. Specification 647,898 also is referred to.
