Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile and copolymers containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile are obtained by polymerizing a mixture containing by weight 20 to 30% monomers, 70 to 80% dimethyl formamide, about 1% sodium p-toluene sulphinate and 0.5 to 2% of a concentrated oxy acid, particularly sulphuric acid, into an immediately spinnable solution at 30 to 50 DEG C. for 20 to 60 hours. Other monomers which may be utilized include vinyl acetate and styrene.
