Abstract

Graft copolymers are prepared by a process which comprises contacting a solid synthetic linear condensation polyamide with a modifier of the formula CX2=CX2 wherein X is hydrogen, an organic radical or an inorganic atom or radical, with the proviso that at least one X is other than hydrogen, the contacting taking place in the absence of any polymerization catalyst (including ionizing radiation) at a temperature of at least 25 DEG C. but below the melting temperature of the polyamide, and for a time sufficient for grafting to take place. Polyamides specified are poly (hexamethylene adipamide) and polyepsilon-aminocaproic acid. Modifiers specified are styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, chlorostyrenes, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl pyridine, acrylic and methacrylic esters, nitriles and amides, acrylyl chloride, vinyl pyrrolidones, vinyl methyl and vinyl oxyethyl formamides, acrolein, methacrolein, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl acetate, vinyl acrylate, vinylphenyl acetate, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, chlorobutadiene, methallyl alcohol and styrene sulphonic acid and its salts and esters. Also present may be cross-linking monomers such as divinyl acetylene, benzene and sulphide and methylene-bis-acrylamide. The modifier may be used in the form of a solution in a solvent, e.g. methanol, or per se in liquid or gaseous form. The polyamide may be used in either shaped or unshaped form.
