Abstract

Procedure for the preparation of methylenetetracycline esters and the respective addition salts with non-toxic and pharmaceutically acceptable acids of the formula **(See formula)** where R is a radical of an organic acid containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms and X is taken from the group consisting of hydrogen, chlorine and bromine, characterized by treating 11a-chloro-6-demethyl-6-deoxy-6-methylene-5-hydroxy-tetracycline III with an acid of the formula ROH (where R has the same meaning as before), in the presence of an agent taken from group consisting of methanesulfonic acid, ethanesulfonic acid and hydrofluoric acid, and by reducing, with an appropriate reducing agent, the respective compound esterified in position 5, to obtain 5-demethyl-6-deoxy-6-methylene-5- acyloxy-tetracycline I, in the form of the free base or of an addition salt with non-toxic and pharmaceutically acceptable acids.
