Abstract

The Specification claims clear transparent copolymers comprising at least 80 mole per cent of a vinyl or isopropenyl aromatic compound and up to 20 mole per cent of a "monohydric" primary or secondary alcohol partial ester of an ethylenically unsaturated di- or tri-carboxylic acid. The term "monohydric" alcohol embraces polyhydric alcohols which have been partially etherified to leave a single free hydroxyl group. According to one process claim they may be prepared by addition of the polymerisable mixture to a polymerisation system containing up to 50% wt. of a specified solvent and continuously withdrawing a portion of the polymerising mix at substantially the same rate as monomer and solvent are added. The specified solvents have a boiling point between 50 DEG and 225 DEG C., contain up to 8 carbon atoms, and are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic ketones or ethers, the latter having an O:C ratio of at least 1:4. According to another process claim specific to maleate esters a solution of 95 to 65% wt. of the partial ester plus catalyst is added to a solution of 5 to 35% wt. of the partial ester, all the aromatic monomer and further catalyst at a constant rate such that addition is completed at 70 to 85% conversion. Optional termonomers which may be used in minor proportions are acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates and dialkyl maleates and fumarates having up to 8 carbons in the alkyl group(s). The copolymers may be used in the coating and laminating compositions described in the Specification 963,942. In addition aqueous solutions and dispersions may be obtained by forming a salt of the free carboxyl group with sodium, potassium or lithium hydroxide or preferably a nitrogenous base such as ammonia, hydrazine, primary secondary or tertiary amines or substituted hydrozines. The salts may be used as emulsifying or suspending agents, e.g. if a xylene solution of its copolymer is neutralised with aqueous ammonia the salt is extracted into the aqueous phase leaving a stable xylene in water emulsion. The higher polyalkylene oxy monoether half ester polymers and their amine salts are thermosetting in cast film form. Specification 715,666 also is referred to.
