Abstract

An aerosol spray hair fixative comprises a mixture of one or more polyhalogenated hydrocarbons which are gaseous at room temperature and a water-soluble organic solvent solution of an alkali metal or amine salt of a polymer or copolymer containing carboxyl groups of an acrylic acid ester, the salt having been prepared by polymerizing an acrylic acid ester of a C1-C4 aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, sec.-butyl, tert.-butyl and isobutyl acrylates, alone or jointly with another ethylenically unsaturated compound, e.g. C1-C4 methacrylates, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, hexyl acrylate, styrene and vinyl alkyl ketones, in a water-soluble organic solvent, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl alcohols and acetone, subsequently hydrolysing in the resulting polymeric solution a sufficient proportion of ester groups with an alcohol solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to render the alkali metal salt of the polymer water-soluble and, if desired, converting this salt into the amine salt e.g. with triethanolamine, the polymeric salt being soluble in water and also, at least in combination with another organic solvent, advantageously a water-soluble C1-C4 alcohol, in polyhalogenated hydrocarbons which are gaseous at room temperatures, e.g. trichloromonofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane and dichlorotetrafluoroethane. Other specified ingredients in the hair fixatives are ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and water.ALSO:An aerosol spray hair fixative comprises a mixture of one or more polyhalogenated hydrocarbons which are gaseous at room temperature and a water-soluble organic solvent solution of an alkali metal or amine salt of a polymer or copolymer containing carboxyl groups of a C1-C4 acrylic acid ester, the salt having been prepared by polymerization and subsequent hydrolysis of the acrylic ester (see Group IV (a)). Polyhalogenated hydrocarbons specified are trichloromonofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, and dichlorotetrafluoroethane. Water-soluble organic solvents specified are methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl alcohols and acetone. Other ingredients specified are ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, water and perfume.
