Abstract

The process of the parent Specification is modified by polymerizing the ester of a monocarboxylic acid in which either the acidic residue or the alcoholic residue contains a vinyl group, e.g. vinyl acetate, in emulsion in the presence of an alkali metal, amine, or ammonium polymethacrylate, or a copolymer of an alkali metal amine, or ammonium methacrylate and 15 per cent or less of an alkyl methacrylate. The emulsifying agent may be a copolymer of sodium or potassium methacrylate and methyl methacrylate. Other emulsifying agents mentioned are sodium alkyl toluene sulphonate, sodium sec.-alkyl sulphate. The exemplified catalysts are sodium and potassium persulphates. The emulsions are suitable for use as emulsion paints. Specifications 627,612 and 648,001 also are referred to.
