Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0884640/IV (b)/1> where R is an alkyl group, R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl or aralkyl group, R2 is a alkyl group, n is 2 or 3, the groups between the parentheses being the same or different, and a process for their preparation which comprises reacting a ketone of the formula <FORM:0884640/IV (b)/2> with an organo-magnesium halide of the formula <FORM:0884640/IV (b)/3> where X is halogen, hydrolysing the product to give an alcohol of the formula <FORM:0884640/IV (b)/4> treating the alcohol with a hydrohalic acid to give a halogen derivative of the formula <FORM:0884640/IV (b)/5> where X is halogen and converting the halide into the corresponding alcohol by known methods. The halide is preferably converted by treatment with potassium acetate in acetic acid to give the acetate ester which is then saponified with methanolic potassium hydroxide. Examples describe the preparation of alcohols of the general formula in which R is methyl or ethyl, R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R2 is methyl and n is 2 or 3 and the corresponding acetates.
