Abstract
Copolymers of vinyl chloride and a diester of citraconic or mesaconic acid are prepared by subjecting the monomers, containing more than 50 per cent by weight of vinyl chloride, to the action of heat and/or a polymerisation catalyst and/or actinic light. A third component, e.g. vinylidene chloride or acrylonitrile may be present. Suitable esters are those of lower alkyl alcohols and of cyclic alcohols, e.g. cyclohexyl or benzyl alcohol. The process may be effected in a mutual solvent such as methanol or in aqueous emulsion having a pH between 5 and 8.5. Specified emulsifying agents include gelatine and a mixture of the sodium salts of sulphated cetyl or stearyl alcohols and the free alcohols. Suitable catalysts are per-salts or organic peroxides to which may be added reducing agents such as ferrous sulphate or sodium sulphite. The copolymers may be precipitated by an electrolyte, e.g. aluminium sulphate. Only a part of the vinyl chloride, which copolymerises at a faster rate than the diesters, need be present initially and the rest then added at intervals during the process. Temperatures of between 30 DEG and 50 DEG C. are preferred and the products can be pressed into clear, pliable sheets without the aid of plasticisers. Specification 497,175 and U.S.A. Specification 1,945,307 are referred to.
