Abstract

Copolymers are made from a mixture of (a) vinylidene chloride, (b) acrylic or methacrylic acid, and (c) an ester having the formula CH2 = CH-COOR or R-COO.CH = CH2, where R is an alkyl group containing 4 to 20 carbon atoms, e.g. n-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates and vinyl 2-ethylhexanoate and stearate. The preferred quantities of each monomer employed are (a) 80 to 95 parts, (b) 1 to 3 parts, and (c) 5 to 20 parts. The copolymers may be prepared in aqueous emulsion using a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite as a catalyst and sodium dihexyl sulphosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium-beta-naphthalene sulphonate/formaldehyde condensate, or mixtures thereof, as emulsifiers. The copolymers are used for coating polymeric film materials, e.g. polyethylene.
