Abstract

1327744 Fluorine-containing acrylic copolymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 Jan 1971 [29 Jan 1970] 2540/71 Heading C3P An oil- and water-repellant and soil resistant aqueous emulsion copolymer contains 100 parts of a mixture of (a) 70-95 parts of and (b) 30-5 parts of ethyl or methyl acrylate where R f is a perfluoroalkyl group of 4-14 carbons. There may optionally be present up to 1 part of hydroxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate and/or N-methylol acrylamide or methacrylamide. Preferably Rf is a commercial mixture containing C 4 , C 6 , C 8 , C 10 and C 12 constituents. The polymers are formed in aqueous emulsion using a cationic emulsifier, e.g. dimethyl octadecylamine acetate, a water soluble azo-initiator e.g. azo-bis-isobutyramidine hydrochloride and dodecylmercaptan. The emulsions are applied to fabrics and dried.
