Abstract

PURPOSE: A protective colloid for emulsion polymerization, improved in dispersion stability and polymerization rate, which is prepared by using a graft-modified starch, obtained by the groft polymerization of a (meth)acrylate monomer with starch.
CONSTITUTION: A protective colloid, prepared by using a graft-modified starch, obtained by the graft polymerization of an acrylate and/or methacrylate monomer with starch. Said monomer is a monomer of the formula (wherein R1, R2 and R3 are H or methyl: R4 is H, 1W5C alkyl or its halide: n is 1W20), for example, hydroxyethyl acrylate, polyethyleneglycol methacrylate, etc. The monomer is graft- polymerized to a degree of 0.01W100%, preferably 0.1W50%. A degree not more than 0.01% is not preferable because of insufficient modification of the starch, whereas a degree more than 100% is not preferable because the starch becomes insoluble in water.
