Abstract
A copolymer comprises the product obtained by polymerizing a mixture containing acrylonitrile and an unsaturated sulphonate containing at least one acrylamide radical and at least one sulphopropionamide radical or a watersoluble salt of said sulphonate, the amount of the sulphonate being up to 15% by weight of the mixture, and said sulphonate having the formula <FORM:0883305/IV (a)/1> in which R and R1 each represent a hydrogen atom, or R-R1 represents the dimethylamine residue of a hexahydro-triazine ring, and in which R2 and R3 represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical. The sulphonate may be N-acryloyl - N1 - sulphapropionyl - methylenedia mine, hexahydro-1,3-diacryloyl-5-sulphopropionyl-s-triazine, hexahydro-1-acryloyl-3,5-disulphopropionyl-s-triazine, and hexahydro-1-acryloyl-3-sulphopropionyl-5-aminopropionyl-s-triazine, and corresponding compounds based on methacrylic acid. The mixture may also contain other monomers such as methyl acrylate and methacrylate, acrylamide, acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and styrene, and cross-linking agents such as N,N1-methylene-bis-acrylamide and hexahydro-1,3,5-triacryloyl-s-triazine. Polymerization may be effected by a batch or continuous process in aqueous emulsion or suspension in the presence of an emulsifier such as sodium lauryl sulphate and a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, azo-bis-isobutyronitrile or an ammonium persulphate-sodium bisulphite redox system.
