Abstract

Film-forming colloids suitable for the preparation of silver halide dispersions in the production of photographic emulsions comprise copolymers of on a weight basis (a) 60 to 98% of methacrylamide and/or acrylamide, (b) 1 to 38% of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a monohydric C1 to C20 saturated alcohol and/or a vinyl ester of a saturated C1 to C20 aliphatic carboxylic acid, and (c) 1 to 24% of an olefinically unsaturated compound containing one or more acid groups. For component (b), specified alcohols are methanol, ethanol, iso-propyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, iso-nonyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, cyclohexyl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol, while the specified vinyl esters are acetate, propionate, butyrate and stearate. For component (c) the compounds may be carboxylic, sulphonic, or phosphonic acids such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, sorbic acid, or maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, citraconic acid as well as semi-esters of these acids with the above-mentioned alcohols, vinyl or styrene sulphonic acids, or vinyl phosphonic acid. Elastic films may be formed by cross-linking with formaldehyde. Typically the copolymers are formed by homogeneously mixing in water in a stirrer type vessel methacrylamide, acrylamide, methyl acrylate and methacrylic acid under a nitrogen atmosphere, heating to 75 DEG C. and polymerizing by adding potassium persulphate to yield say a 12% polymer solution.
