Abstract

Solutions suitable for the manufacture of fibres comprise an acrylonitrile polymer dissolved in a solvent consisting of formic acid alone, aqueous formic acid of concentration at least 70 per cent. an anhydrous mixture of formic acid with one or more substances capable of dissolving polyacrylonitrile, a mixture of formic acid and water with one or more substances capable by themselves of dissolving polyacrylonitrile, or a mixture of formic acid, oxalic acid and water. The acrylonitrile polymer may be polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer of acrylonitrile with methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, phenylacrylate, or styrene. Substances capable of dissolving polyacrylonitrile are cyclic anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids, e.g. maleic, succinic and glutaric anhydrides, lactones, e.g. gammabutyrolactone and gamma- and deltavalerolactones, cyclic carbonates of glycols, e.g. cyclic ethylene carbonate. The fibres and films are preferably made by wet-spinning or wet-casting techniques such as those described in Specification 712,984 and the fibres oriented by stretching, e.g. as described in Specification 636,476. The compositions may also be used as coatings.
