Abstract

A composition of matter comprises 70 to 95 weight per cent of (1) a polymer containing from 80 to 99 weight per cent of acrylonitrile and from 1 to 20 weight per cent of another monoolefinic monomer copolymerizable therewith, and 5 to 30 weight per cent of (2) a polymer containing at least 80 weight per cent of vinyl or vinylidene chloride and less than 20 weight per cent of other monoolefinic monomers copolymerizable therewith. Monomers specified as being copolymerizable with acrylonitrile are acrylic, methacrylic and chloroacrylic acids, their amides and their methyl, ethyl, butyl, octyl, methoxymethyl and chloroethyl esters, vinyl fluoride, chloride and bromide, vinylidene chloride, 1-chloro-1-bromoethylene, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, chloroacetate and propionate, itaconic acid, esters of itaconic fumaric, maleic, citraconic, mesaconic and methylene malonic acids, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, acenaphthalene, methyl vinyl ketone, alkyl vinyl ethers, vinyl pyridines and imidazoles and alkyl derivatives thereof, N-vinylcarbazole vinyl furane, vinyl sulphonic acid and N-vinyl succinimide. The acrylonitrile copolymer employed may contain three components, e.g. acrylonitrile, a vinyl pyridine or vinyl imidazole and vinyl chloride or methacrylonitrile. Alternatively, a blend of copolymers may be used, e.g. a blend of a copolymer of 93 to 97 weight per cent of acrylonitrile and 3 to 7 weight per cent of vinyl acetate blended with a copolymer of equal weights of acrylonitrile and a vinyl-substituted heterocyclic tertiary amine in such proportions that the amine constitutes 6% by weight of the blend. Chlorine-containing polymers specified are homopolymers of vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and copolymers with each other and with monomers such as acrylic, methacrylic, maleic and fumaric esters, vinyl acetate, isopropenyl acetate, vinyl alkyl ethers, vinyl alkyl ketones and isobutylene. The chlorine-containing polymers may be stabilized by compounds such as dibutyl tin dilaurate, tin mercaptide, epoxidized fatty acid esters, dibasic lead phthalate, lead carbonate and cadmium and barium compounds. The polymer blends may be obtained by co-precipitating aqueous dispersions of the two polymers, or, preferably, by dissolving the polymers in a solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide and mixtures thereof with ethylene sulphite or diethyl phosphate; nitromethane and water and mixtures thereof with diethyl sulphite; dimethyl methane phosphonate, tris(dimethylamido) phosphate, tri(betacyanoethyl) nitromethane, trichloronitropropanol butyrolactone and ethylene carbonate. From the resulting solutions fibres are spun possessing dyeability and altered burning characteristics.
