Abstract

1440422 Acrylonitrile polymer solutions JAPAN EXLAN CO Ltd 29 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 23874/74 Heading C3P Acrylonitrile polymer solutions comprise a copolymer of at least 40% by weight acrylonitrile, a vinyl halide and/or vinylidene halide in a proportion of not more than 50% by weight, and 0-15% by weight of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated compounds, dissolved in an aqueous solvent system consisting of 30-60% by weight of a thiocyanate, 25-55% by weight of water and 5-45% by weight of at least one organic compound selected from compounds of the formula R<SP>1</SP>(OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OR<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>-A-CN or R<SP>4</SP>COOR<SP>5</SP> and from 1-methoxy-2- propanol, 3-methoxy-1,2-propanediol, 3-methoxy-1-butanol and γ-valerolactone, wherein in the above formulµ R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, R<SP>2</SP> is H, C 1 -C 3 alkyl, -COCH 3 or -COC 2 H 5 , R<SP>3</SP> is methyl, cyano, hydroxyl, -COOCH 3 or -COOC 2 H 5 , R<SP>4</SP> is H, methyl or -CH(OH)CH 3 , R<SP>6</SP> is methyl or ethyl, A is C 1 -C 4 alkylene or alkylidene, and n is an integer from 1 to 4. The compounds of the above formulµ include ethylene glycol and its oligomers, and ethers and ether-esters thereof; nitriles of mono- and dicarboxylic acids, ethylene cyanohydrin, acetone cyanohydrin, ethyl cyanoacetate and lactonitrile; and esters of carboxylic acids. The vinyl or vinylidene halide component of the copolymer may be, for example, vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinylidene chloride or vinylidene bromide. Examples of the optional monomer components are unsaturated carboxylic acids and esters, nitriles and amides thereof, unsaturated ketones, vinyl esters, unsaturated N-containing heterocyclic compounds, vinyl ethers, styrene and its derivatives, allyl alcohol, unsaturated sulphonic acids and salts thereof, unsaturated aldehydes, and unsaturated pcontaining compounds. Flame resistant shaped articles, e.g. fibres and films, can be obtained from the polymer solutions.
