Abstract
Copolymers of acrylonitrile with lower alkyl esters of acrylic or lower alkyl acrylic acids which contain 85 to 94 per cent of acrylonitrile are dissolved in nitromethane which is either anhydrous or contains not more than 3 per cent of water. The lower alkyl groups forming the esters or substituting the acrylic acid are those containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The solutions may be formed into fibres or films by the dry or wet spinning and casting techniques. After formation the fibres and films may be oriented by hot-stretching. The preparation is described of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate by copolymerization of the monomers in a mixture of water and methyl alcohol using a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite as a catalyst.
