Abstract

Halogenated naphthoquinoneimines are made by treating a 2, 3 - dihalogen - 5 - nitro - 14 - naphthoquinone with concentrated sulphuric acid and reducing the 2, 3-dihalogen - 5 - nitroso - 8 - hydroxy - 1, 4 - naphthoquinone thereby obtained with sulphur or sulphur-supplying compounds in a strong acid medium to produce a 6, 7-dihalogen - 5. 8 - dihydroxy - 1, 4 - naphthoquinone - 1 - imine. The products dye cellulose ester, polyester, and polyamide fibres. In examples, (1) 2, 3 - dichloro - 5 - nitro - 1, 4 - naphthoquinone and the corresponding 2, 3 - dibromo body are each dissolved in sulphuric acid (100 per cent), followed by the addition of sulphur and fuming sulphuric acid; (2) 2, 3, 6 - trichloro 1 5 - nitro - 1, 4 - naphthoquinone is slurried in 100 per cent sulphuric acid, followed by the addition of sulphur. A dyeing example illustrates the dyeing of polyester fibres with the product of (1). Specification 629,706 is referred to.
