Abstract

To increase their affinity for acid dyes, textile fibres, including artificial fibres, are treated with aliphatic compounds containing a nitrogen atom, oxygen atom, and halogen atom, each attached to a carbon atom, other than compounds in which these three elements occur once only in the molecule and are attached to the same carbon atom. Sulphur, selenium, or tellurium may also be present in these compounds. Suitable compounds are those described in Specification 390,516, and the compounds proposed for reacting with viscose in Specification 390,518. Particularly suitable are the halogen derivatives of oxy-amines, e.g. the halogen derivatives of amino derivatives of propanol or glycerol. The compounds may be employed in the form of their esters, ethers or N-substitution products, or there may be used substances which react to give rise to the required compound, for example, there may be used a mixture of a -dichlorhydrin and ammonia. The textile material may, if desired, be pretreated according to the known methods, for example, with acylating agents, acids, acid halides, sulpho-acid halides, or phosphorus halides. Examples are given in which cotton yarn or artificial silk yarn is treated with one of the compounds described in Specification 390,516 or proposed for contacting with viscose in Specification 390,518, with or without the use of the following pretreating agents, phosphorous halogen compounds, p-toluene sulphochloride and pyridine, p-toluene sulphochloride and caustic soda, or benzoyl chloride, and with or without catalysts comprising aqueous or alcoholic caustic alkali solutions of various strengths.
