Abstract
Viscose silk &c. of high elasticity and strength is obtained by coagulating the filaments in a mineral acid bath and then treating them in a plasticizing bath containing inorganic or organic acids of a concentration at least twice that of the acid of the first bath, but in any case not in excess of 30-35 per cent sulphuric acid or equivalent strength of other acid, the temperature of the second bath being about half on the centigrade scale that of the first bath, but in any case not in excess of 15 DEG C. In an example, the first bath contains 10-15 per cent sulphuric acid, 15-25 per cent sodium sulphate, 0-1 per cent zinc sulphate, and 2-4 per cent keratin, and its temperature is 40 DEG C., while the second bath contains 30-35 per cent sulphuric acid and its temperature is 15 DEG C.
