Abstract
Poorly emulsifiable bitumens are rendered more easily emulsifiable by adding thereto an oxidized or sulphurized product of tall pitch (see Group V) in an amount between 1 and 5 per cent. Emulsions are obtained by adding dilute caustic soda solution. Specification 683,170 is referred to.ALSO:Tall pitch of acid index over 35 is treated to bring the acid index below 35 either by oxidation by air blowing at above 100 DEG C., or by heating with sulphur at above 150 DEG C., and the product added to bitumens to improve their emulsibility. Between 0.1 and 15 per cent. of sulphur is used and the preferred temperature is 210 DEG -240 DEG C. Specification 683,170 is referred to.
