767,433. Brake testing devices. SOC. ARCHIMEDE. Dec. 28, 1954 [Dec. 28, 1953; Dec. 13, 1954], No. 37461/54. Class 103 (1). An apparatus for testing hydraulic brake circuits comprises a length of tubing 1 having a coupling 4 at one end which has a fluid-tight rotary connection to a plug 7, which may be screwed into the air bleed hole of an hydraulic brake cylinder, and a similar coupling 5 at the other end having a rotary connection with a member 26 screwed on to a part 41, 42 which carries two pressure gauges 27 and 57, having dials calibrated to read respectively in tens of kilogrammes per square centimetre pressure and for pressures below 2 kilogrammes per square centimetre. In operation after the coupling 4 has been screwed on to the bleed connection, a light pressure is applied to the pedal and air bled by unscrewing the member 30. After this has been tightened brake pressures in the cylinder are registered on the two gauges. The low-pressure gauge 57 is intended for measuring residual pressures in the brake with some accuracy and is protected from damage by the high pressures appropriate to the other gauge by means of a diaphragm 48 interposed in the hydraulic line thereto and sealing a volume such that when the diaphragm 48 is against the surface 62, the decrease in volume corresponds to an increase in pressure of about 2 kg. per sq. cm.
