[Also in Group XXXVIII] A pressure measuring device comprises a diaphragm, an abutment plate, and a valve between the two so that its movement is limited by the abutment plate. In Fig. 5 the pressure P 1 to be measured (e.g. in an engine cylinder) is opposed by a constant calibration pressure P 2 and if the latter is greater the valve 3 is pushed downwards to shut off the measuring pressure P 1 . When the measuring pressure becomes sufficient to lift the valve the diaphragm 1 can follow its variations. In Fig. 7 the valve 3 is clamped between the diaphragm and abutment 4, and the calibration pressure P 2 is admitted to the space above the diaphragm as well as to the top of the valve. Previously known devices for comparing measuring and calibration pressures are illustrated.
