A mounting for a measuring device, for example, a dial gauge extensometer 21, in a proving ring 11 adapted to be placed between the platens of a press to measure the load, comprises a ring 13 within which the gauge is supported and which ring is mounted in the proving ring on steel balls 17 diametrically oppositely disposed between the two rings. The gauge is secured to a bracket 18 rigidly attached to the ring 13 and has a feeler arm 22 which bears against the flat end of a boss 19 also attached to the ring 13. Pressure is applied to the proving ring through external bosses 12.
