827,226. Dynamometers, testing physical qualities of materials, pressure gauges. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. Feb. 4, 1957 [Feb. 2, 1956], No. 3828/57. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for measuring the force exerted by an hydraulic press 1, 2 comprises an auxiliary cylinder 7, connected to a pressure fluid system 50, and an auxiliary plunger 6 arranged for displacement by the force P exerted by the press 1, 2, a valve 8 being provided to regulate the liquid flow to the interior 10 of the cylinder 7 in accordance with the force exerted by the press 1, 2. A pipe 11 conveys liquid under pressure to the interior 10 of the cylinder 7, and a pipe 12 connects this interior to a liquid pressure gauge 13-18. The cylinder 1 of the press rests on the auxiliary plunger 6 and hence applies a force Q to it. If the force Q increases, the auxiliary plunger 6 will be displaced downwards, valve 8 will open further and the pressure of liquid in the interior 10 will increase to balance the new force Q. The reverse process takes place if the force Q decreases. The area of plunger 6 is slightly greater than that of plunger 2, so that, despite the loss of pressure due to valve 8, the pressure in the interior 10 can balance the force Q, if the liquid is applied from the same source as that operating the press 1, 2. The apparatus may be used to measure the force exerted in compression tests of materials or by use of the frame 21 and coupling 22, the force exerted in tension tests. It is stated that allowing liquid to leak around the sides of the plunger 6 and from the cylinder 13 of the gauge permits greater accuracy than does the usual closed system. The pressure gauge consists of a plunger 14 in a cylinder 13 acted on by the fluid and connected by a linkwork 15 with a pivoted lever 17 carrying a weight 16, lever 17 being connected indirectly with an indicator 18.
