Abstract

626,871. Testing physical qualities of materials; dynamometers. ARTHUIS, A. R. Aug. 27, 1946, No. 25587. [Class 106 (ii)] In a hydraulic machine for testing materials by tension, compression, bending, shearing, &c., the actual press is combined with a dynamometer which gives simultaneously a reading of the load on a dial, and a diagram showing the load and strain of the specimen, the dynamometer being connected to the source of hydraulic pressure in the press, and the indication of the strain being obtained by causing the movement of the piston in the press to move a sheet of paper on which the diagram is traced. A ram 2, in a cylinder 3 supplied with liquid by a hand pump 8, is connected, for tensile tests, to the upper clamp 9 for a test-piece E, and the lower clamp 10 is connected to a verticallyadjustable screw 11. The ram 2 contains several inner concentrically-arranged rams which can be brought into use to vary the sensitivity of the machine. For hardness tests, a tool having a steel ball is attached to the end of the screw 11 and the test-piece rests on the top of the composite ram 2. The cylinder 3 is connected by a pipe 7 to a hydraulic dynamometer D where the liquid forces upwardly a plunger 5 (not shown) against the action of a spring. To alter the sensitivity of the dynamometer a slidable sleeve may be arranged to bring further springs to bear on the plunger. The plunger 5 is connected by a cable C to a pulley 29 mounted on an axle to which an indicator 29a is secured and movable over a dial 14 having several scales to suit the different ranges of the machine. A pin 20 (not shown), secured to the plunger 5 and projecting through a slot 201 in the casing thereof, is connected to a cable 21 which, after passing around a twostage pulley 22 to magnify the movements of the pin 20, is connected to a stylus 19 slidable vertically on a rail 23. The stylus 19 engages a record web mounted on two drums, one, 15, of which is positively driven by a cable 18 and pulley arrangement by the movement of the ram 2, the free end of the cable having a counterweight 24 attached thereto. The stylus 19 this traces a diagram showing the relationship between load and strain.
