Abstract
552,993. Fatigue tests. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., and HERON, J. A. Oct. 22, 1941, No. 13583. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for use in fatigue testing specimens comprises a cylinder for housing the specimen, a fluid system communicating with the cylinder, and means for influencing the fluid system to vary the stress applied by the fluid directly to the specimen. A specimen 2 of dumbell shape is enclosed in a cylinder 1 and subject to rapidly varying hydraulic pressure from a twin impulsor 11, the operating pressure of which is shown on an electronic pressure gauge 21. The specimen may have a positive pre-load induced by accumulator 18, or a negative pre-load applied to the ends of the specimen. A high-speed gauge 22 measures the strain. A stepped plunger, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be interposed between the impulsor and the specimen, and different fluids may be employed on the two sides of the plunger. The test specimen may be enclosed in a furnace.
