Abstract
1,257,835. Test cell. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 26 Feb., 1970 [12 March, 1969], No. 13054/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division G1] A cell for use in testing material such as rock comprises at least two segments together forming a housing having a cylindrical bore therethrough, each segment comprising a flexible member 20 and a rigid member 11a or 11b, each flexible member 20 and rigid member defining between them a cavity 23 (Fig. 2) for pressure fluid to be introduced at 24, each flexible member 20 having an inner partcylindrical surface 21 for engaging the circumferential surface of the specimen to be tested, and retaining means such as rings 15, 16 which fit over flanges 12, 13 for holding the segments together to form the housing. Axial pressure may be applied by means of platens 31, 32 each of which has a planar sample engaging surface and a part spherical surface which engages a corresponding part spherical surface on an outer platen 38; rams operate on platens 38. Strain gauges may be fixed to the surface of a specimen under test, and a gauge to measure the fluid pressure may be connected to one of the holes in member 11a. Members 11a, lib, 15, 16 may be of mild steel or annealed alloy steel; members 20 may be of urethane rubber.
