Abstract
744,136. Testing pressure gauges. PRESSURE GAUGES, Ltd. Oct. 1, 1953 [Aug. 13, 1952], No. 20380/52. Class 106 (2). A pressure amplifier for increasing the range of a pressure gauge testing equipment coinprises a loadable plunger 7 in a cylinder 2 containing a hydraulic fluid, a fluid supply reservoir 4, and a pump 3 by which a pressure can be built up in the hydraulic system until it balances the weight 9 on the plunger 7 when, if the gauge 38 is correctly calibrated, the reading on the gauge will correspond to the effective loading of the weights 9. The pressure amplifier 5 is introduced into the system between the gauge 38 and the piston and cylinder unit 2 and comprises a differential piston having its smaller diameter 32 nearest the gauge 38, and a control valve 37 adapted to connect both sides of the differential piston together when required. The pistons 31 and 32 of the differential piston are formed as separate pistons that abut against one another in operation, thus avoiding accurate coaxial machining of the cylinders. To measure a low pressure, valves 21 and 37 are opened and the pump handle 23 is rotated to withdraw the pump piston to fill the pump cylinder. Pistons 31 and 32 will fall under gravity during this operation. Valve 21 is then closed and the pump handle 23 rotated until the pressure generated lifts the piston 7 and the weights 9. The fluid pressure throughout the whole system is then uniform and the gauge 38 should indicate this pressure. To test the pressure gauge 38 for higher ranges than can be dealt with by the weights 9, valves 21 and 37 are closed before the pump handle 23 is rotated to create a pressure. The pressure acting below the piston 31 will cause it and piston 32 to rise to compress the liquid trapped above the piston 32. Since the cross-sectional area of piston 32 is less than that of piston 31 the pressure applied to the pressure gauge is greater than that generated by the weights 9 in the cylinder 2.
