766,713. Ampoule opening machines. JOHNSEN & JORGENSEN FLINT GLASS, Ltd. Aug. 10, 1955 [Aug. 10, 1954], No. 23196/54. Class 81(1) A method for opening ampoules prior to filling comprises spinning the ampoule about its longitudinal axis at say 3000 r.p.m., playing a fine flame jet on the stem and automatically separating the ampoule body from the bulb by the action of tensioning means when the stem softens. As shown, pinion 29 is operated to displace bearings 11, 12 towards each other against the action of springs 21, 22 causing member 9, mounted on stationary rod 10 having a sliding fit in an axial bore in shaft 3 to open jaws 5, 6 of chucks 1, 2 mounted on shafts 3, 4 against the action of spring 7. Ampoule 25 is inserted in the jaws and gripped by further operation of the pinion prior to the rotation of the chucks. The cutting flame 37 which may be displaced tangentially to the axis of rotation by means of movable levers .35 attached to gas supply tube 36 softens the stem of the ampoule, the chucks are synchronously drawn apart by the action of springs 21, 22 and the two portions of stem are separated. The jaws are opened by the engagement of member 9 with projection 8A to discharge the ampoule body and bulb. The speed of rotation of the ampoule is sufficient to overcome, by centrifugal action, the tendency. of the softened stem walls to fall in. Specification 740,011 [Group XXIII] is referred to.
