Abstract

746,653. Assembling bands on bottles &c. MEYER MANUFACTURING CO., G. J. May 25, 1954 [March 16, 1954], No. 15388/54. Class 108 (3). [Also in Group XVII] In apparatus for applying wet regenerated cellulose bands, which shrink for tight fitting on drying, to bottles &c., compressed air is passed between the bottle and the inner surface of the band to act as a lubricant as the band is slipped endwise on to the bottle and to increase the diameter of the leading end of the band temporarily. A plunger 23 moves vertically in a bearing 31, supported by the machine frame, and is actuated through a lever 33 by a cam 22 on a motor-rotated horizontal shaft 20; said shaft 20 also carries another cam for actuating a horizontally sliding carriage carrying suction cups 25, 26. A second horizontal shaft 36 carries a cam 37 actuating a lever 38 carrying a stripper sleeve 42, sliding vertically on the lower part 23a of the plunger 23, said part 23a having a diameter a little greater than the bottle neck on which the band is to be slipped. The plunger 23 has an axial longitudinal bore 44 intersecting a transverse bore 45, at its upper end, to the exterior. The bearing 31 has a radial part 46 for leading in compressed air controlled by a valve actuated by a cam on the shaft 20. A flattened tube B of regenerated cellulose is advanced by feed rolls 27, 28 to lie between the suction cups 25, 26, and a suitable band length B<SP>2</SP> is cut off by cutters 30, 29. The suction cups then begin to open the band B<SP>2</SP> by their suction and separation, and they transfer the band to locate it directly under and coaxial with the plunger 23. The descending plunger 23 takes up the band around its lower end, with the lower marginal band portion overlapping the tapered lower end of the plunger, the suction cups being then disengaged. Upon the lower end of the plunger 23 contacting the top of the bottle A, the part 46 coincides with the bore 45 and compressed air flows down the bore 44 and is deflected laterally by the container top to flow in grooves on the lower surface of the plunger 23 to flare the band end, which is pushed by the descending stripper sleeve 42 on to the bottle neck. The portion 23a of the plunger 23 may be longitudinally fluted. When the end of the band passes on to the bottle neck, air flows, between the band and the bottle to give a lubricating air film. On completion of the stripper sleeves motion, it rises with the plunger and the air is cut off.
