Abstract

706,915. Packaging. NIEPMANN, F NIEPMANN, O.. HAHN, C., and MITTAG, H. Oct. 31, 1950 [Oct. 31, 1949], No. 26581/50. Class 94 (1) [Also in Group VI] Apparatus for packing tampons includes a press mould in which the tampon is compressed radially and provided with longitudinal notches and a hollow mandrel, adjacent and in line with said mould, over which, a cylindrical wrapping container is placed and into and through which the compressed tampon is pushed. An uncompressed tampon is lifted by a plunger 6 to a position before a press 7 into which it is pushed by a plunger comprising an outer part 2 and am inner part 3. Pointed pressing jaws 8 of the press, Fig. 5, first move in to give the tampon a cruciform cross-section, then further pressing jaws 9 move in to give the tampon a final cylindrical compressed shape, Fig. 7. The compressed tampon is then pushed by the inner plunger part 3 through a hollow mandrel 15, on to which a wrapper 17 closed at its outer end has been pushed by a plunger 18, and then, in the wrapper, into one of two tubes 20 carried at either end of a lever 21. The lever 21 is then rotated to carry the package to a closing position where the open wrapper end is closed by members 23, 24, 25, Fig. 2, and the completed package pushed out of the tube 20 by a plunger 27 and sterilised. A wrapper tear strip may .be inserted around the middle of the tampon with the wrapper.
