An apparatus for making bag shaped packages from at least one heat sealable web comprises means 30, 31, Fig. 7, for drawing the material over a mandrel to shape the web to a tubular form S, the means 30, 31, engaging the tubular shaped web S substantially in the planes of the outer surfaces of the mandrel. The apparatus includes means for forming longitudinal and transverse seams in the shaped web. In Fig. 1 a first web 1 passes down over a shaping plate 9 folding the web to a U-shape having outwardly extending pleats 1<SP>1</SP> at its base, Fig. 5, as well as outwardly directed margins 1<SP>11</SP> at the ends of the U-shape. The tube is completed by a second web 2. The web 2 is sealed to the margins 1<SP>11</SP> by reciprocating heating jaws 21, and the pleats 1<SP>1</SP> are rendered permanent by reciprocating heating jaws 22. Where the second web 2 is joined to the web 1, the shaping plate 9 changes into the form of a hollow mandrel 39. The tube is pulled over the mandrel 39 by reciprocating clamping jaws 30 and counter pressure blocks 31 gripping the pleats 1<SP>1</SP> and margins 1<SP>11</SP>. The tube is filled via a hopper 38 and is then divided into separate compartments by reciprocating heat sealing jaws 40 below the jaws 30. The sealed packages are severed from each other by knives 45, 46. The mechanism reciprocating the jaws 30 and 40 includes means whereby the length of the finished package can be varied. The web shaping plate 9 and the mandrel 39 may be horizontial, as in Fig. 8, and articles G to be packaged may be raised on a platform 53 and be pushed into the tubular web by a reciprocating member 54.
