850,090. Packaging. BROCK, H. W. Sept. 24, 1957 [Oct. 2, 1956], No. 29985/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 94(1). Articles such as biscuits are placed in an open receptacle formed of thermoplastic material in the heat-contractable state and the receptacle is closed and then heated to cause it to shrink into close engagement with the articles, an air vent being provided between the interior and exterior of the receptacle to allow air to be expelled during the shrinking operation. Receptacles in the form of bags or cartons may be closed by seaming or folding in the usual manner using adhesives or heat-sealing techniques, the air vent being in the form of a pin hole. Preferably, however, flanged receptacles are formed in succession by deforming a thermoplastic web and closed after the insertion of the articles by applying a covering web to the flanges and sealing by applying heat and pressure, the sealing of a small portion of the flange of each receptacle being deferred until after the receptacle has been heated to cause it to shrink. The apparatus described and claimed in Specification 850,089 is employed.
