Abstract

867,909. Machine-tool details. HARDINGE MACHINE TOOLS Ltd., and BAKER, R. J. Oct. 28, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956; Dec. 10, 1956], Nos. 32752/56 and 37691/56. Class 83 (3). A gripping device or collet for stock-feeding mechanism comprises a feed-tube 10, Fig. 1, adapted to be attached to a reciprocable part of a machine-tool such as a lathe, and a sleeve 36 located within the feed-tube formed with axially extending slots 26 which provide between them a number of radially resilient fingers 28. Means, in one embodiment, in the form of a screwed ring 29, is provided for axially compressing the sleeve the fingers of which are so shaped that they bow inwards. The feed-tube 10 is bored to take the sleeve which may be located at its inner end by an undercut shoulder 21. One or more of the slots 26 may extend to the end of the sleeve. Variations in the form of the sleeve are described and in one embodiment two sleeves placed end-to-end are employed.
