Abstract

571,310. Making glass ampoules. SHAW, G. S. Nov. 13, 1943, No. 18928. [Class 56] Relates to a machine for making glass containers or ampoules of the type in which a number of pairs of chucks adapted to grip the ends of short lengths of tube are rotated about their own axis and displaced relatively to heating means, the chucks being automatically moved apart when the tube is sufficiently heated to draw down the central position, and the chuck jaws being then moved to release the tubes. According to the invention, the movement of the chuck jaws is one of partial rotation about an axis parallel to that of the tube held by them. 'In the machine shown, each tube is held in a pair of chucks formed by jaws 3, 4 and 5, 6, the upper end extending between a further pair of jaws 24 which, however, do not grip it. The jaws are all mounted on a pair of rods 29, 30 secured at their lower end to a base 7, and at their upper ends slidably engaged in a yoke 8. The jaws 5, 6 are slidably mounted on the rod 29, 30 and are connected to the yoke 8 by rods 23 which pass through arcuate slots in the latter and through guides in the jaws 24. The base 7 is formed with a taper socket to engage over a taper spindle 15 mounted in a rotating table. As the glass tube held in the chucks is carried past a gas burner 18 the spindle is rotated by the engagement of a friction wheel 16 with a track 17, so rotating the chucks and tube. At the end of the heating period the tube is drawn out by raising the jaws 5, 6, this movement being produced by cam tracks 12, 13 engaged by a roller 11 on a hanger 10 pivotally attached to the yoke 8. Further rotation of the table causes trip cams 26 to engage stops (not shown) on the jaws 3, 4 and 24 causing them to turn on the spindles 29, 30 against the action of torsion springs. The jaws 5, 6 turn with the jaws 24, the tube being ejected laterally.
