Abstract
241,544. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Niedergesass, B. F.). Oct. 20, 1924, [Convention date]. Forming silica - glass articles.-A method of forming rods, tubes, or other elongated articles of silica consists in feeding a slug of vitreous silica into a heating zone at a constant rate, and in drawing the silica as it becomes plastic. Fig. 1 shows a machine for drawing a rod 13 from a slug or blank 12 of clear fused quartz which has been prepared by fusion in a vacuum. The slug is mounted in a chuck 15 and is rotated on its axis. At the same time, it is fed forwards into a heater consisting of a casing 40, of refractory material, into which a number of burners 41 project. The motor 16 which rotates the chuck also drives two shafts 44, 45. The holder 46 for gripping and drawing the rod 13 is carried by a platform 14 which is moved upwards by pinions 63 driven by the shaft 44. A friction gear 66, 67 enables the speed of the platform or its direction to be varied in relation to the movement of the slug 12. The holder 46 is rotated by the shaft 45, the speed of rotation being the same as that of the slug. When tubing is to be made, a tubular slug is used and air is fed to the interior of the slug through a tube 31.
