Abstract
A cylinder liner is cast from an alloy grey cast iron consisting of 3.25-3.50 per cent carbon 2.00-2.25 per cent silicon 0.50-0.80 per cent manganese 1.00-1.50 per cent copper 0.30-0.50 per cent chromium 0.10-0.25 per cent nickel 0.12 per cent max. sulphur, 0.25 per cent max. phosphorus and the balance iron. The liner is hardened by heating to 1600 DEG F. and quenching for one minute in a salt bath at 475 DEG F. followed by air cooling for 1 1/2 hours. It is then tempered for one hour at 350 DEG F.-425 DEG F. A flanged end of the liner which is to be cold worked is annealed below the critical temperature at about 1000 DEG F. to 1400 DEG F. by localised induction heating.
