Abstract
572,376. Heat-treating steels and alloy steels. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., WATERS, P. W., and SHACKLETON, J. May 28, 1940, No. 9386. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Steel which has been cast and heat treated contains 0.95-1.40 per cent of carbon, 0.75- 1.25 of silicon, manganese 0.25-0.75, up to .08 of sulphur and up to .06 of phosphorus. The steel is heat treated by heating to 1650-1750‹ F. for 2 or 10 hours, cooling to 1200‹ F., heated to 1400-1450‹ F. for 3 hours, and cooled to 1050‹ F., the cooling taking at least 2 hours. The steel may also contain either singly or in combination, 0.5-2.5 per cent of chromium, 0.5-2.5 of tungsten and 0.2-1.0 of molybdenum. The steel &c. may be subsequently hardened throughout or only surface-hardened.
