Abstract

572,853. Alloys; annealing. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., WATERS, P. W., and SHACKLETON, J. March 5, 1942, No. 2908.' [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] A malleable cast iron alloy, suitable for brake drums and other purposes, contains 1-1.5 per cent of carbon, 1.5-2 per cent of silicon, 1-2 per cent of copper, 0.25-0.75 per cent of manganese, and up to a maximum of 0.08 per cent each of sulphur and phosphorus, with or without a small amount of a carbide stabilizing element, e.g. up to 0.5 per cent of chromium or molybdenum. The alloy is heat treated by soaking for 1¢-2 hours at 1700-1750‹ F., cooling quickly in air to 1200‹ F., soaking for 2-3 hours at 1400-1475‹ F.., and cooling to 1250‹ F. at not more than 35‹ F. per hour, followed by normal cooling in air. Specification 489,478 is referred to.
