In a heating installation including a boiler 1 associated with a domestic fire and a tank 2 of a hot water supply system, a water-heating receptacle 5 at the same level as the boiler contains an electric immersion heater 10 and a separate annular water chamber 9 connected to the boiler by two pipes 6, 7. Furthermore, two other pipes are connected to the receptacle 5, one, such as a vent pipe 14, having a branch 15 leading to at least one radiator 16, whilst the other, such as a pipe 11 conveying water from a make-up tank 12, has a branch 17 connected to the radiator as a return pipe. The main chamber of the receptacle 5, i.e. apart from the chamber 9, is part of the radiator system. The chamber 9 acts as a heat exchanger between the supply and radiator systems so that, if desired, instead of both the electric heater 10. and the fire of boiler 1 being used, either can supply the heat to both systems or, if a valve 8 in pipe 6 is turned off, either can heat its own system. Make-up water from a tank 13 is supplied to the bottom of the hot water tank 2 to replace hot water drawn off at the top and this make-up tank 13 may supply water to the receptacle 5. An electric immersion heater may be fitted to the tank 2. The Provisional Specification describes also an installation in which there is no annular chamber 9, the pipes 6, 7 connecting directly between the boiler 1 and receptacle 5 and the supply and return pipes to the radiators being connected to these pipes 6, 7.
