In a domestic hot water system, a cold water cistern 2 and a hot water cistern 3 arranged side by side are interconnected at the base by a valve-controlled U-tube 10, which has an elbow 13 above the bottom of the hot water cistern to direct the water horizontally ; a valve controls the inlet of cold water to the cold water compartment 2 ; and an outlet 9 from the hot water compartment is situated above the base of the cistern to ensure that a predetermined amount of water will remain in both compartments if the cold water supply ceases. The hot water compartment is fitted with flow and return pipes 11, 12 connected to a boiler, and/or with an electric immersion heater or calorifier. The opposed walls 4 of the cisterns are spaced apart and may be filled with asbestos fibres or other insulating material.
