Abstract
755,274. Tank fittings. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 3, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1954], No. 12760/54. Class 69 (1). A tank fitting for securing to the wall of a tank around an opening, and on which connectors, gauges and conduits may be mounted includes a pair of substantially parallel spaced rigid rings, a fuel-resistant fabric flange with its inner periphery secured between the rings and spaced outwardly from a central opening in the fitting, and fuel-resistant plastic material between the rings and extending from the inner periphery of the flange to the surface of the fitting so that the periphery of the flange is pro - tected from fuel in the opening. The Figure shows a half section of a fitting incorporating two flanges 22 and 23 folded over retaining rings 27 and 30 and held in annular recesses 28, 29, 31 and 32 in three rings 24, 25 and 26, layers 33 and 34 of fuel-resistant plastic such as Neoprene, "Buna-N" or "Thiokol" (Buna and Thiokol are Registered Trade Marks) extending from the recesses to the opening of the fitting and also lining openings 35 provided for the attachment of a connector or other fitting to the opening. Portions 36, 37 and 38 of plastic material strengthen the flanges 22 and 23 and ensure that they are correctly spaced to receive the tank wall between them. The fitting is made by building up the fitting and then vulcanizing the plastic under heat and pressure. Two further embodiments having a single flange and two rings are described and illustrated, and the fitting is stated to be especially suitable for attachment to self-sealing flexible aircraft fuel tanks.
