A high-speed steel consists of: .C.4,79.-.5,97.atomic per cent .Cr.3,7.-.4,8.atomic per cent .V.3,97.-.4,86.atomic per cent .Mo.1,25.-.3,42.atomic per cent .W.0.-.1,05.atomic per cent .Fe the balance,.... the proportions of the above constituents complying with the formulae:-Ct - (Cv + Cm) = -0,1 to -0,4 atomic per cent Cv/Ct-Cv = 4 to 6, when Ct is the atomic percentage of all the carbon in the steel, Cv is the atomic percentage of carbon required to combine with all the vanadium in the steel to form Vc, and Cm is the atomic percentage of carbon required to combine with all the tungsten, molybdenum and chromium in the steel to form (W, Cr, Mo)6 C type carbides. The above atomic percentages correspond to the following weight percentages: .C.1,05.-.1,3.per cent .Cr.3,7.-.4,5.per cent .V.3,7.-.4,5.per cent .Mo.2,2.-.6.per cent .W.0,.-.3,5.per cent .Fe the balance.....
