Abstract
751,818. Thermionic-cathode tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. June 4, 1954 [June 4, 1953], No. 16676/54. Class 39 (1). A rotating cathode 9 is surrounded by a screen 12 having a potential not greater than the cathode, and having a slot 11 or 11a facing the cathode. This may be a cylinder rotated by a conventional rotor and stator winding. A slot 1 mm. wide is suggested, with a cylinder of 2 cm. diameter and a speed of 50 r.p.s. Thus each point on the cathode is in front of the slot for 1/1000# sec. at a time, 50 times per second, so that the equivalent is obtained of continuous emission under conditions of pulsed emission, with higher permanent current in consequence. Since the cathode is rotating, a sliding contact 21 is provided. In order to avoid passing a high current through this sliding contact, the arrangement of Fig. 3 may be used. Here the sliding contact 21 merely serves to bring cathode 9 to the appropriate potential. The main cathode current passes through a fixed cathode 22 with heater 23, which is inside cathode cylinder 9, and negatively biased with respect to it. The latter is maintained at emission temperature by bombardment from the inner cathode 22. An independently biased grid 24 may be provided. The cathode is used in the travelling-wave tube more fully described in U.S.A. Specification 2,694,783.
